ANIA SCANLAN, MFT INTERN
WHO I HELP
I help individuals struggling with life transitions, uncertainty, low self esteem or life difficulties who need a space of their own to process the events of their lives and to get to know themselves more deeply, compassionately and consistently.
I support couples who are having difficulty connecting and want to improve their communication, couples who want to work through relationship conflict or lack of trust, as well as transitions.
Empowerment will be one of the main threads that is woven into the fabric of our work together. Whether it’s individual or couples’ therapy, I am passionate about supporting you in grounding yourself and finding your own power.
Therapy is a great place to process life events and transitions and as a therapist I am a great sounding board. I believe in the power of listening and objectivity and unconditional positive regard. Carl Rogers said, “for a person to “grow”, they need an environment that provides them with genuineness (openness and self-disclosure), acceptance (being seen with unconditional positive regard), and empathy (being listened to and understood).”
I will listen to you and reflect back your own inner strength and wisdom. This intentional listening and reflection will allow you to shed expectations and judgement, and to get to know yourself better. I also gently challenge deeply held beliefs that may stand in the way of meeting your goals. I do this with a calm, steady, and unconditionally supportive presence, as well as with warmly shared laughter.
I am currently completing my last year of the graduate Marriage and Family Therapy program at St. Mary’s University. I am a licensed attorney and the field has given me the push to become a therapist.
These days I live with my family and a Siberian cat named Misiu in a northern suburb. I love reading and have always enjoyed reading Polish children’s authors, Jan Brzechwa and Julian Tuwim. I am a native Polish speaker and have a fondness for working with the Polish population and people of Polish descent.
